Copilot for Power BI

Copilot for Power BI is generative AI in Power BI. Microsoft Learn says it gives chat-based help, from on-the-fly analysis for business users to DAX generation for advanced creators.

What Copilot for Power BI does

  • Helps with analysis through chat, for business users who want answers from their data.
  • Generates DAX for advanced report creators.
  • Offers a report agent Copilot pane on the right side of reports, which Microsoft says is generally available.
  • Offers a Power BI agent as a standalone, full-screen experience, which Microsoft says is in preview.

What people use it for

  • Ask a question of a report

Use the report pane to get a quick summary or answer.

  • Write a measure

Ask for DAX, then read it and test it against known numbers.

  • Explore without building

Try the standalone Power BI agent where your organisation has it.

Who it suits

  • Analysts and report creators who already use Power BI.
  • Admins who decide whether Copilot is switched on.

Plans and access

Microsoft says Copilot needs paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) or Power BI Premium (P1 or higher), trial capacities and free SKUs are not supported, the admin setting for Copilot must be on, and your capacity must be in a supported region. Read Microsoft’s current terms before you plan around it.

How to start

  1. 1Read Microsoft’s overview and requirements. Open
  2. 2Ask your Power BI admin whether Copilot is enabled and on what capacity.
  3. 3Ask the report pane a question you already know the answer to.
  4. 4Check generated DAX and summaries against the data before you share them.
