Deep Learning (CS230)

Deep Learning (CS230) on Stanford Online is a ten-week graduate course on the foundations of deep learning, building neural networks and leading machine learning projects, taught in a flipped-classroom format and ending in an open-ended project.

Who it suits

  • Engineers and analysts with Python and linear algebra who want a structured, credit-bearing course on deep learning.
  • Learners who want case studies from healthcare, autonomous driving, sign language reading, music generation and language.

What it covers

  • Foundations of neural networks and deep learning, and techniques to improve them: regularisation, optimisation and hyperparameter tuning.
  • Convolutional and recurrent networks, including LSTMs, and their applications.
  • Strategies to organise and successfully build a machine learning project.
  • Advanced topics: generative adversarial networks, deep reinforcement learning and adversarial attacks.
  • Practice in Python and TensorFlow.

Before you start

  • Stanford lists a conferred bachelor’s degree with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Familiarity with programming in Python and linear algebra (matrix and vector multiplication).
  • Machine Learning (CS229) may be taken concurrently.

Common questions about Deep Learning (CS230)

How long is it and what is the workload?
Stanford lists 10 weeks at 9 to 15 hours a week, 4 academic units, in an online format.
How is it taught?
In a flipped-classroom format: you watch videos and do programming assignments and quizzes at home, and class time covers advanced topics and projects.
Can I enrol any time?
Enrolment is only open during set periods, and an application is needed for graduate courses, so check the page for the current dates.
Is there a free version?
Stanford links a course website for the course material; check what it makes public. The Stanford Online course itself is a paid, credit-bearing course.
